Happy New Year!!!!

So here we are again. The first rays of a new rising sun have been hard to find but they are out thre someplace I'm sure. If there is snow where you are maybe you should rejoice? The is lots of snow here in London where I am but people aren't too happy. Well this used to be a country that was geared up for the chilling winds of Winter and the icy cold snaps... I guess global warming helped everyone to forget just how bitter the climate used to be? Anyway 2010 promises to be another rollercoater ride of music and energy synthersized through the portals of performance and recording. Yes here's to a great 2010 to you and yours wherever you may be in this wonderful world of seemingly endless possibilities...

Fresh for 2010 - a new project. Behold... Are you a freak or a geeq? Well come on down to any of our Januaryor February shows in London and perhaps you'll find out? Geeq is the brainchild of my good friend Nikolas Kolya who combines the freshness of avant garde jazz with the anarchy of robust alternative rock.

GEEQ are... Nikolas Kolya: Vocals + Guitar.....Andrew John: Bass.....Matt Phillips: Drums

The Shows are...
17 Jan 2010 - The Camden Rock - London
25 Jan 2010 - The Gaff - London
03 Feb 2010 - Bull & Gate - London

That's all folks!

December 2009

With Christmas fast approaching I have the last 3 gigs of the year to look forward to with Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band. These shows will be off the wall in terms of us giving our very last bit of energy that remains within our 7 combined bodies after a truly mesmorising 2009 that has seen us play all over France as well as UK, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, and the beautiful Reunion Island. I'd also like to say thank you to the beautiful people in the south-of-France who have truly captured the spasm vibe each and every time that we have been blessed to play there. The people have always come out in their masses and they have always come to party and be part of the joint experience that is creating an energy between stage and audience, musician and concert goer. It is this energy loop that creates fantastic shows that forever live on in the hearts and minds of all involved and it is this feedback that all musicians continue to crave and capture somehow... Thank you Sete, Vence, Montpellier, Toulon, Toulouse, Castres and Marseille.

Final 3 Shows of 2009

11 Dec 2009 - Cosmic Groove / Le Jam - Montpellier

12 Dec 2009 - Cosmic Groove / Le Jam - Montpellier

18 Dec 2009 - L’Abreuvoir / Ferme du Buisson - Marne La Vallée

THE NEW MUSIC

Having recently looked back and rediscovered some jams  recorded onto cd that I used to take part in some years ago. I found a wealth of heavy and inspirational sounds that lieterally left me open mouthed. The depth of some of the playing was exceptional, spiritual and electric. I decided to share a few of these hidden treasures with you and relive those beautiful times in the process. This collective of musicians centred around the nucleus of Craig Tamlin - drums, trumpet and percussion, Lee Knight - electric guitar and a multitude of effects, Bob Peachy - alto, tenor sax and flutes, and myself on electric upright bass, would come together most Sundays in Greenwich at Craig's studio space as if it were holy communion - the music that eminated was truly empowering and although the band never gigged in this guise, it did go on to become Afracadabra that contains 3 members of the current Spasm Band that now play with Anthony Joseph. Listen, feel and touch the untapped energy and raw emotion from 2004 over in the music section as I just have...

There's also some new music to check out from Tamlin's Octopus which is a collective of improvising musicians who are invited to perform set works or total improv at these wonderful gatherings that have taken place at such places as Cafe Oto - fast becoming the new/experimental music venue of choice and a Mecca for lovers of the artform. Head over to the music page and see how a Larry Young piece - Twin Stars Of Thence was tackled recently.

Happy Listening!

We touched base with our friends and fans for a rare London show at the Vortex Jazz Club on the 10th. Check out some live action filmed by a fan!

Then we played a couple of shows in Birmingham. On the 12th we played at Artsfest  in Centenary Square, then on the 13th we played  Live Box @ The Drum, which is co-hosted by Sowetto Kinch.

On the 25th we made our debut playing on Spanish soil in Barcelona at Merce Festival, Av de Catedral. A short clip filmed by Roger Cowell can be viewed here on Facebook and some images taken by Patricil Esteban can be viewd here on Flikr

And finally I've added some new music recorded last September with my good friend Nik Kolya. You can listen to the stuff over on the Music Page

August 2009

Big gigs, big stages and beautiful audiences was the theme of August as we completed the summer leg of the Bird Head Son tour that had began in January! A month that saw us play gigs with some very heavy peformers. We started off in Brest on the 2nd for Le Bout Du Monde. Next up was Cabaret Sauvage - Opening for George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic in Paris on the 3rd.

Followed by Fiesta’ Sète on the 4th where we shared the stage with Femi Kuti.

We ended by making the pilgramige to La Reunion from Paris via a 10 hour flight.
. Where I was greeted by a bassist who had transcribed most of my basslines from the Bird Head Son album - a surreal but beautiful moment captured here in the photo below...

So from Brest in the north west of France to the Indian Ocean of La Réunion.... One Love!

'Backed by squawking free-jazz and supercharged percussion, the Trinidadian poet and academic struts, bawls and howls his way through his latest works – part Voodoo priest, part prize-fighter. Three Things -

Firstly - The new Spasm Band album Bird Head Son is now scheduled for release in the New Year - Jan 2009 and will be coming out on Naive Records who are based in Paris, France.

Secondly - I will be heading off to Cape Town to play at the Pan African Space Station with the rest of the band the first week in October. More details below...

Between October 1- 4, PASS plays host to genre-busting music outfits from global Africa dedicated to exploring new musical territory. Participating artists include the Lagos-Accra based Afrobeat fanfare Ayetoro; famed drummer Cindy Blackman and her quartet (US); Trinidadian jazz-poet Anthony Joseph and his Spasm Band; Dub poet Bebson de la rue and his band Tryonix (DRC); Bangui-born afro-soul-beat bassist and singer Bibi Tanga together with trail-blazing French DJ/producer, Le Professeur Inlassable; LA based hip-hop funk scientists Science Feline and a number of progressive South African artists, including Carlo Mombelliand his Prisoners of Strange (Jhb), Blk Jks (Jhb), Madala Kunene (Durban) and the Cape Town based collaborative Goematronics project.

They'll all be playing at disparate venues across Cape Town that both affirm and disrupt the musical geography of the city – from Langa's Guga S'thebe and the Assembly in District Six, to Mowbray's Town Hall, The Kimberley Hotel in the CBD and the Slave Church on Long Street.

More info as it comes... Check on my Myspace page for further info and dates.

August 2008

The next two months will be quieter affairs. The new album "Bird Head Son" by Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band is due out sometime in November 2008, whereas the new EP "La Diablesse" is out now! A collection of duets that I recorded with Anthony should be out in August/September this year also.

In the meantime catch up with band via these illuminating video clips below -

July 2008

This month I will be playing at the FMM Sines festival in Portugal on the 23rd and
recording an album of duets with Anthony Joseph on the 31st. I get the chance to
play double bass for this date - it's gonna be a very heavy ocassion and promises
to produce some inspired music as it will be totally improvised.

And finally here are some photos from our recent performance
at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, July 4th 2008.

June 2008

This month sees the release of Anthony Joseph & The Spasm Band's limited edition 12"
entitled "La Diablese" - taken from their forthcoming album "Bird Head Son"
scheduled for release October 2008. "La Diablese" features Keziah Jones (guitar) and
Joe Bowie (trombone), and will be on the French independent label Heavenly Sweetness -
It's the second  single release from the band following on from "Spirit Lash" in 2006.

Also take a moment to check out some brand new video footage of the Spasm Band
live in the studio performing/recording "Dream On Corbeau Mountain" which will also
be featured on the new album "Bird Head Son".
You'll find it in the Video section of the site - it's hot, hot, hot!

Finally Another date for your calendars:

Anthony Joseph And The Spasm Band will play a rare London date at The Mau Mau Bar
on Saturday July 5th - the day after returning from playing at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark.

April/May 2008

April was a quiet month for the band having just finished recording the new Spasm band album.

May started off with a gig at Jamm in Brixton, London on the 4th which was a Sunday. We had a couple of excellent guests playing with the band in another expanded line-up at the Components night.

Anthony Joseph - voice/poet

Andrew John - bass

Colin Webster - sax/flute

Adrian Owusu - guitar

Paul Zimmerman - Djembe/Conga

Paul Brett - percussion

Craig Tamlin - percussion

Jason Yarde - baritone sax

Shabaka Hutchins - bass clarinet

Then on May 11th we played at the Art-Rock Festival in Saint Brieuc, France with our regular lineup - it had been quite a while since we last played as a five-piece.

Anthony Joseph - voice/poet

Andrew John - bass

Colin Webster - sax/flute

Paul Zimmerman - Djembe/Conga

Paul Brett - percussion

Other than that we've now heard some of the mastered tracks from our recording sessions in March and by all accounts the new album is gonna be huge and well worth waiting for when it comes out later this year sometime in October with contributions from Keziah Jones on guitar, Joe Bowie on trombone and David Neerman on vibes.

Finally - make a note in your diaries for our next performances which will be in July.

July 4th - Roskilde Festival (Denmark)

July 23rd - FMM Sines Festival (Portugal)

March 2008

This is a busy month with a decent gig at Cargo in London followed by the recording of the new album in Paris. We will have a few surprise guest recording with us and I'm really looking forward to it. It's gonna be a killer album full of Voodoo Funk!
